    About the role


    The Design Engineer will be part of the new Orica Technology Centre based in Hyderabad, India which has been established to provide enabling engineering and technical services to Orica's global business.

    Working on a Monday to Friday roster amongst an inclusive, friendly, and supportive team of industry professionals, the Design Engineer will perform a variety of design and drafting activities to support new and existing Orica products including:


    • Modelling and drawing of engineering components and assemblies;
    • Maintain and improve the designs of existing products;
    • Aiding in the design of new products;
    • Producing and updating detailed drawings (mechanical and electrical) for new and current products.


    The Design Engineer will establish and lead an initially small team of draftspeople, but there is scope for that team to grow overtime.

    What you will be doing


    • Leads activities supporting the development of new products and technology in accordance with Orica safety and legal requirements and risk management conducted through best practice techniques (JSERAs, Hazard studies, HIRACS, FMECA, others).
    • Ensures that the quality of work delivered by the team meets or exceeds required standards
    • Ensures that all intellectual property generated by the team is appropriately protected
    • Ensures the level of customer experience provided by the team meets or exceeds required standards
    • Ensures change management processes are adhered to
    • Acts as direct liaison as required to support Technology and business objectives
    • Manages a team to achieve overall program objectives
    • Manages projects efficiently and within agreed budget
    • Build safety into designs and methods of working on new and current product range;
    • Assembly of prototype systems and integration with software systems;
    • Plan and organise testing including liaising with suppliers and site facility to allow timely testing of products;
    • Develop solutions that meet the cross-functional stakeholder requirements including product reliability, manufacturability, cost and time to market;
    • Responsible for the delivery of clear and precise manufacturing documentation including BOM's, assembly instructions, drawing packs, QC and test instructions;
    • Responsible for the delivery of clear and precise documentation to support the development of training material for the maintenance and usage of Orica products;
    • Completion of tasks and projects as assigned on time, with products meeting the demanding requirements of Orica's customers, especially relating to environment, usability and reliability;
    • Apply effective problem-solving techniques to assist the Orica support teams in the resolution of product issues – Level 4 Support;
    • Ensures design files and information are kept up to date and stored in accordance with product development procedures;
    • Develop strong IP for Orica
    • Creation of 3D models/assemblies and 2D drawings from 3D models in SolidWorks using common drafting standards;
    • Update and modify 2D drawings in a timely manner for design changes.
    What you will bring


    • English language (oral and written) to an advanced proficiency, as the global business language of Orica
    • University Degree or equivalent in an appropriate Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Mechatronic, etc.);
    • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a commercial environment;
    • Experience with design of mechanical components and assemblies including supplier documentation, BoM, 3D modelling, design calculations etc.;
    • Product design experience including, design, prototyping, testing of complex engineering equipment and/or systems and documentation;
    • Computer Aided Design using SolidWorks and AutoCAD;
    • Strong technical writing skills and a keen eye for detail;
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly verbal and documentation skills;
    • Highly motivated individual, able to set priorities and meet deadlines, a strong team player and able to motivate others;
    • A practical knowledge of plant and equipment fabrication and materials preferred
    • Chartered Professional Engineer, Registered Professional Engineer or equivalent credentials preferred
    • Hydraulic and Electrical design drafting experience (Cable drawings etc.) is an advantage
    • Process engineering knowledge is desired
