A manual cutting master in the garments industry is a skilled professional responsible for managing the fabric cutting process, from marker making to final cut part inspection. They ensure accurate, cost-effective cutting by placing patterns, minimizing waste, directing team members, and ensuring compliance with garment specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Marker Making & Planning: Creating efficient markers (pattern layouts) manually to maximize fabric utilization and reduce wastage.
- Fabric Spreading Control: Supervising the laying of fabric to ensure proper tension and alignment.
- Precision Cutting: Cutting fabric components using hand shears, electric straight knives, or band knives based on patterns.
- Quality Inspection: Inspecting cut panels for defects, grain line accuracy, and adherence to measurements.
- Team Supervision: Managing helpers, cutting operators, and bundling staff to meet production deadlines.
- Material Management: Coordinating fabric usage from the store and managing inventory for production.
- Alteration & Technical Support: Performing necessary pattern adjustments and providing input on, or performing, garment fitting and alterations.
Key Competencies:
- Deep knowledge of fabric types, patterns, and cutting techniques.
- Strong hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
- Ability to read technical drawings and patterns.
- Expertise in operating manual and electric cutting tools.
