    Generate technical designs

    Computer Applications or equivalent

The primary responsibility of a draftsman is to draft technical drawings for different objects, machines and structures. They usually use client notes and rough sketches to create designs. Draughtsmen may also use different types of software and designing tools to draft product blueprints. They often revise and adjust technical designs for installations and various construction projects such as buildings and highways.

    Research data for drafts

Draftsmen research also generally accurate data for designing structures and buildings. They may have to conduct field surveys and visit different site locations to learn about existing structures. Draftsmen keep these data in mind while designing blueprints. They also archive the schematics of structures to use as a reference in the future.

    Create 3D designs

Draftsmen typically use professional computer-aided design (CAD) software and other tools to create three-dimensional designs of structures and buildings. They digitally inspect designs in 3D tools and identify areas of improvement. Generally, draftsmen may first create initial 3D designs then modify them further to meet the client's expectations.

    Review accuracy of designs

To ensure the quality of structures, machines and products, draftsmen may have to attend on-site meetings and plan projects and review every minute detail. They also generally have to prepare multiple reports and maps to make sure the technical drafts are accurate. Reviewing existing designs to consider different factors (such as weight) can also be their responsibility.

    Collaborate with other professionals

Draftsmen may have to regularly collaborate with other professionals from the construction or production teams. They often explain blueprints to construction team members, discuss project requirements and make adjustments if necessary. Draftsmen may also coordinate with civil engineers, architects and scientists to finalise project details.
