We are looking for a passionate Backend Software Engineer to join the Fulfillment Optimization team. This team builds the platforms that determine how customer orders are fulfilled, optimizing for Wayfair profitability and customer delight.A big part of our work revolves around enhancing and scaling customer-facing platforms that provide fulfillment information on our websites, starting at the top of the customer funnel on the search pages all the way through orders being delivered.
Throughout this customer journey, we are responsible for maintaining an accurate representation of our dynamic supply chain, determining how different products will fit into boxes, predicting how these boxes will flow through warehouses and trucks, and ultimately surfacing the information our customers need to inform their decision and the details our suppliers and carriers require to successfully execute on the promises made to our customers.
We do all of this in milliseconds, thousands of times per second.What You Will Do:
Flex your strength and knowledge on Java, DevOps, and microservice development.
Define and ensure services are built to industry best practices, including observability, architectural patterns, and inter-team dependency mechanisms (like SLOs)Work closely with architects and other teams across Storefront to breakdown an existing PHP monolith into well defined Java Microservices with clean boundaries and clear API contractsServe as the local technical lead in the critical domain, designing & building a platform that interfaces with many different systems within and outside Wayfair and partner globally.
Architect and write code to implement high-quality, scalable, future-proof services that will have effective system boundaries and will support long-term vision & strategyConduct technical debate across an entire platform and help come to durable documented conclusionsDrive high-impact architectural solutions
and hands-on development, including inception, design, execution, and delivery following good design and coding practicesObsessively focus on production readiness for the team including testing, monitoring, deployment, documentation, and proactive troubleshootingIdentify risks and gaps in technical approaches and propose solutions to meet the department's technical visionWork closely with product managers, designers, and peer engineering teams to define project requirements and execution plansWhat you bring to the table6+ years of experience in engineering, with a preference for candidates with a mix of start-up and large-company experienceeComm domain expertise is a bonusHands-on experience driving software transformations within high-growth environments at scaleExperienced in architecting and building large-scale, cloud-based, and event-driven systems across various projectsExcellent communication skills with demonstrated experience driving teams forward and ability to influence resultsGCP target cloud platform, experience with AWS/Azure at scaleDistributed microservice architectures with well architected domain boundariesHigh volume async messaging architecturesLarge scale relational and NoSQL style data storesCommon open source platforms, tools and framework, eg: Kafka, Kubernetes, Containerization, Java microservices, GraphQL APIs, Aerospike etcAssistance for Individuals with DisabilitiesWayfair is fully committed to providing equal opportunities for all individuals, including individuals with disabilities.
