- This position provides the leadership and direction for the day-to-day operations of the Container Terminal. Responsible to ensure the highest productivity in the terminal and to provide excellent service to the lines calling at the port.
- Responsible for leading the terminal operations and a team of managers in the operations department. Main task is to maintain and create safe working conditions while ensuring and maintaining a high productivity and cost-efficient operation.
- Execute plans for the operations department of APM Terminals, as per the KPOs which are set by the GM operations within the borders of business plan & budget. Manage the daily operations according to the agreed operating principles of the business & relationships with customers.
- Ensure compliance with HSSE policies & procedures by all operational staff.
- Attend daily berthing meetings with the marine operations & liner agents to plan vessel berthing & sailing schedules considering the allotted window period for various services.
- Ensure that there are no service level failures to the customers.
- Deliver a level of service to customer that is equal to best international standards and complying with contractual commitments.
- Strive continuously to achieve best operational & safety practices in terminal operations.
- Enforce safe working practices and ensure lost time injuries are kept to nil.
- Ensure a cost-efficient operation and include TCO initiatives in excess of current best practices.
- Liaise closely with liners & their agents, customs agents, trucking companies, Customs, and other statutory authorities to ensure that their requirements are met.
- Measure and monitor performance against KPOs, policy and guidelines.
- Responsibility that all managers and labor in the operation are trained in best operation practices with regards to advanced operations strategies and new technology.
- Ensure that the terminal adheres to APM Terminals world standards for container terminal operations.
- Ensure compliance with policies, guidelines, safety regulations and relevant maritime legislation.
- Manage employee performance & measures to improve by identifying training needs carry out appraisals, and address issues related to discipline and grievances.
- Implement continuous process enhancement measures and motivate team to achieve better efficiencies in productivity and service level commitment to customers.
- The major impact will be the maintenance of agreed standards in operational performance at the terminal.
- The incumbent is expected to supervise a group of subordinate managers towards the achievement of results. Responsibility for the execution of operational activity while complying strictly with the safety standards.
- Preferable a university degree in logistics, maritime and port engineering or a marine qualification at least at Masters 1st Class level (where he has had command of a vessel)
- Minimum 8 years in operations management roles in container terminals.
- Understanding of the container shipping industry and an ability to relate with shipping company and other associated industry managers.
- Good communication skills with the ability to communicate across the organization.
- Extensive understanding of modern terminal operations including computer terminal management systems
- Extensive knowledge of APM Terminals operational practices.
- Fluent in local language (where applicable) and English.
- Some exposure to finance related matters and reporting against financial objectives.
- Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to provide leadership, obtain cooperation and assistance to meet objectives.
