Addressing Health Issues with a Positive Mindset

Addressing Health Issues with a Positive Mindset

6db7734d.jpg

A light fever came over to say hello to me last night. It is still there, but I don't let it bother me too much. After all, it's a visitor and will have to leave in some time. I cannot let it have the importance it seeks. There are better things to do.

However bright and driven we might be, there are often occasions when we catch a bug or eat something wrong which pushes us to our limits, physically and emotionally. All we want is to give up and give in. Wallow in it. Let it make us feel miserable and take one entire, precious day away from us. We might have our agendas full, we might have extremely important commitments, but it keeps us from doing all that. Or even, if we do end up checking off all action items, we do it half-heartedly.

A year back, I was that person, who would just sit and sulk and keep asking, "Why does it happen to me?" Popping in medicines, feeling irritable, and somehow I felt all this made the sickness stay even longer.

My fear of not getting things done on time, helped me overcome this helpless situation. I had to do just one thing. Take "less" out of that helpless and add a spoonful of "full".

Now every time, I find myself down with a fever, headache, bug, etc., I know it is my body's way of telling me, slow down and rest a little. An illness (the small ones) is a friendly reminder. It shows that your body is unable to cope with certain strains and the best way to address the issue is to acknowledge it and rest. Don't think of the work that is not getting done, don't blame the sickness. It is actually giving you that space to rest that your body has been longing for, an excuse that you would never use otherwise.

Due to our busy schedules, many of us often forget to go for our bi-yearly or bi-monthly health checkups; these small-time illnesses make us visit the doctor and get them to run a few tests, to make sure everything is fine.

There is one tip that I would like to share with you when it comes to handling sickness and pain. It is a principle of yoga. Something yogis works towards and achieve. But it is something we too, can practice in our daily lives.

Separating the mind and the body

You are not your body. You are the spark, the spirit that lives inside the body. So, whenever you experience pain, remember, it is occurring in some part of THE BODY. It is not really affecting you. This is good way to deal with it. It has worked for me, many a time. It helps me focus, get work done, and make sure I don't neglect the illness and visit a doctor. But I don't let it make me suffer.

It helped me stay sane and wanting to live when I was fully conscious, but on IV for 5 days, and was not allowed food or water (maybe 5 ml per day). So, I know this works. And, I hope it helps you, too. This approach works very well with emotional stress, too. All you have to do is to separate your body, mind, and yourself, and you will see that you are above all stress, pain, and unhappiness.

I totally agree, Lisa \ud83d\udc1d Gallagher. Prevention is always better than cure. And, if at all we do fall sick, immediate medical attention should be sought without delay. It is difficult to send my husband to the doctor, too, when he falls sick. It seems the answer to all kinds of ailments is Eucalyptus, for him.

I'm happy this works for you Proma Nautiyal and it's great advice for all. I do have to say, at times I have to tell my husband to listen to his body because he's a work-a-holic and he thinks he can ride out every storm. There have been times that he thinks he's tougher than the illness and ended up becoming more ill because he didn't take some time to rest. So, I remind him that when your body is ill, you need to listen and rest when it's telling you to. Some things can wait. Wallowing doesn't help but good self care as it appears you described is vital.
