Seeing Through People - A Boon or a Burden?

Seeing Through People - A Boon or a Burden?

3dc9243a.jpg Photo by Natalia Figueredo on Unsplash

Marked loner and a person who does not give out much in terms of information. Given this title, I am going to share with you all, something that I have experienced, almost forever.

My characteristics make me fit to be a spy and sometimes a living lie detector. My friends thought it was great that I could catch lies out of thin air or read between lines spoken by a person trying their best to hide their true feelings.

I have had people, sometimes strangers, come up to me and confess and share secrets and stories. All this even when I never went asking for them to share.

How does it feel to see through people and what they say? Utterly painful. Their intentions, whether good or bad, is something personal to them. I do not want any part in it. I like to sit and be by myself. Then why do I end up being the one who always ends up seeing everything lying beneath the emotions of the person?

It could be a chat, an email, a phone conversation and the best, a face-to-face. It is utterly disturbing. Intuition, while a gift can be overwhelming in excess, like everything else. If you do believe in clairvoyance, I have had episodes in the past of that, as well.

I was then told by some that it was because I am observant that it leads to understanding people or situations with such clarity. Keeping to myself was more of my way of observing more, talking less, and thus processing subconsciously. Overtime, it resulted in heightened intuition and being able to draw patterns in the most unlikely scenarios (SmallData, if you please).

Basically, I caused it to myself. But I also found out that this could really help me out in connecting with people. Helping me understand them and their needs better. Everyone expects some kind of attention or lack of it. Gauging that helps me connect with them better like we were old friends. The very characteristic that made me feel uncomfortable now started making me feel better.

Whenever, a person snaps, I don't snap back. I can see that they have had a rough day, they are fearing something, they might be upset, or they have been deprived of something which has now come up in our conversation. It helps me maintain my cool and keep balance in conversation.

I market my content writing services with the tagline "Empathetic Content" and I mean every bit of it. Clients/ employees/ stakeholders need to be spoken to, not told. Being able to understand how they might perceive certain things helps me create content that is fit for them.

So in the end, seeing through people a.k.a pure intuition is great for business but not so great for personal life. Wish I had a switch for it to toggle back-n-forth. Until I figure it out I would love to hear about your experiences with intuition.

We are all born with it so we all have it.

Seek and you shall find. ~ Matthew 7:7

Thank you for sharing thoughts, Yolanda Ávila - Kaizen Proyectos. Good to learn that you have taken this gift in your stride and are using it the perfect way, connecting without getting affected. That sounds great to me.

You are a warm and kind person, Lada 🏡 Prkic. An idealist and a straightforward person, which makes you an amazing human being. :-) The place and the people around a person makes us the person we are. The effects could be negative or positive or sometimes a general mass effect.

"You can plant seeds with folks that change the harvest a few months latter.." what a beautiful thing to say, Harvey Lloyd. I agree with the thought of not being able to understand if someone really wants help or if they just want to vent. Thankfully, I have identified some people who just want to help and have stopped offering any kind of solution to them, whatsoever. They seemed together agitated when I would offer a plan on how things could be solved. Sometimes, it is just nice thing to be a good listener. I am still learning. If I am not having a conversation and just listening (and it is not a course or classroom setting), I seem to wander off. But I definitely am doing better than before so I guess it'll all be good.

I agree with you, Cyndi wilkins.I don't really like people shouting at anyone. Everyone should be treated with respect and dignity. We treat our kids with respect, as that is how they learn how to treat others with respect. Even when someone slips at the duty, we should try to understand them rather than assuming they are careless. Being your own boss allows you that space to treat everyone the way you think fit. It never helps to work under pressure from people.

I don't know if I have all these qualities, Proma. :-) But when it comes to seeing the good in people, I'm an idealist. If nothing else, idealists are happier people, at least I think they are. :)

In personal settings i have found that people don't like it when you identify one the walls that are stopping then from achieving success. It's to close to the heart of the matter. I find myself asking the question, are you asking me for my opinion, or are you just venting? A point to consider. Time and the journey is a teacher. I may not be able to shorten your learning curve but for the most part people do eventually see the journeys futility. Sometimes its right to speak of the journey you see in others and others it needs more time. When you see it you also need to discern the timing of learning. I know for me i am slow to change. So once i recognise or someone points something out through their actions i need to experience the journey a little more before the change happens, with the new knowledge. You can plant seeds with folks that change the harvest a few months latter..

Proma 🐝 Nautiyal...It is for this very reason I went into business for myself...While being in a position of management over my peers I was encouraged to 'bark orders at them' as a means of keeping them in line...My response to upper management..."I wasn't aware this was a boot camp.' I never could conform to this way of thinking and in turn it has probably cost me a much more lucrative position in life...However, the end game is this...We can't take all those material things with us when we leave here, but this is certain...We are responsible for the effect we have had on each and every living soul we have ever touched...So handle with care;-)

I did come across the bathing in salt water technique and also sprinkling salt over my shoulder, as advised by one of my Japanese friends. Now that you mention that you benefitted from it, I will definitely give it a try. And yes, I would absolutely love it if you could share some of these techniques with me. My mind is buzzing all the time. I would like to give it a rest. (I do meditate) :)

Thank you Lada 🏡 Prkic. I must say that it takes a strong heart, one filled with love and courage, when it comes to seeing the good in people without knowing much about them. My experiences, unfortunately, have turned me pretty cynical, although I would have loved to feel the warmth of being a person who trusts people and sees goodness in them.

I agree, Harvey Lloyd. My instincts have served me well in matters of business/work. However, it does not (almost never) end so well the it comes to personal matters. So now, unless it is extremely important, I keep my thoughts to myself and have the occasional "I told you so" moments and find happiness in them. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.

You are so right, CityVP 🐝 Manjit. I really like it when I come across people who are hard to read. They make me curious and I like talking to them. Thank you so much for your comment, really enjoyed reading it.

You have a great starting position. Given the options i would say there is no other starting position to be had.. I too give the person, environment and situation the benefit of the doubt until i fully know what is going on and worked through the issues of relationship. Great comment. Honest, and refreshing.

I was going to write a comment, but I can't express my personal experiences in such eloquent and compelling way like you Proma. So I will just say that my intuition saved me many times from making wrong business decisions. But besides being intuitive, I'm also a naive and my "starting position" is always seeing the good in people, though I failed at it more than once.

We all have a gifts and/or skills. The ability to sum up an environment, person or situation is the most basic of these DNA passed on skills. But a few people or blessed or cursed with the gift of discernment. This gift allows us to see beyond, words, actions and reflections to see the real core of issues. Unfortunately we can't turn the gift off. With each encounter the gift and skills around it grow. Our mind is automatic within the gift. I share this gift as you have described. The cautionary tale is apathy. With this skill you see the games people play and you know it won't end well for them. At first you want to help, but they are startled because you looked behind the curtain. They instantly reject or walk away. Overtime this will lead to apathy if not watched. The gift is powerful in business where goals and roles are concrete. It's social and semi-professional environments (the gift) where you tend to get your hat handed to you. Use your gift wisely:)

Clearly we are two peas in the same pod. Sometimes when we are wrong about people it helps our learning, but unfortunately our intuitions often point us beyond the fascade of the branded persona. It is not that we can see through people, but that we are intimately woven into the human condition. That is why I like being wrong about people because in that case I have met someone who has the capacity to surprise me - and that is a good thing !

Sometimes it hurts to know even without intending to know. This is the pain of knowing. That you are gifted in reading people beyond what they say is both a blessing and a pain. But to know no matter what pain would surface out is better than not knowing. Or, is it? Sometimes not knowing is a blessing. You are gifted Proma 🐝 Nautiyal. It is how you put your gift to good use. I wonder what you find behind the curtain of my comment! Sharing
