Role Purpose
Bench Scientist - Synthetic Organic & Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Discovery Research.

The bench scientist will be executing synthetic organic chemistry reactions in the laboratory and will be synthesizing new chemical entities (NCEs) for Medicinal chemistry, drug discovery research.

Areas (% of time)

Key Accountabilities/ Responsibilities

1. Design and Synthesis
***
Key Responsibilities:
  • Basic understanding of setting
  • up & executing reactions in the laboratory for synthesis of NCEs by following safety protocols and synthetic routes.
  • Understand the safety protocols, wear appropriate PPE and other safety required equipment, follow the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and discuss with supervisor/lab head as well as team members before executing the reactions.
  • Conduct literature search, plan the synthetic route and execute the reactions with proper reagents, solvents and equipment (glassware, stirrers, rotary evaporators, vacuum pumps etc.,) while maintaining certain reaction conditions (temperature cooling/heating/regular).
  • Monitor the progress of the reaction using standard methods and various analytical chemistry techniques (TLC, GC, LCMS, HPLC etc.,)
  • Identify and execute appropriate workup and purification (chromatographic techniques) to produce an intermediate/final NCEs with desired purity/quality.
  • Meet the productivity benchmark (Number of reactions/number of steps/number of NCEs, quantity, quality/purity of compounds) and timelines.
  • Archive of samples to compound library as per departmental guidelines.

Analytical skill

  • Characterize the intermediate/final NCEs through analytical methods (NMR, Mass spectrometry, IR, UV, HPLC etc.,) and interpret the results.

Documentation and presentation

  • Accurately document all the reactions performed (experimental procedures/protocols, reaction progress, key observations, workup, purification and analytical characterization etc.,) in the Lab Note Book (Handwritten /Electronic).
  • Prepare final reports as and when required.
  • Maintain the records, data integrity and follow strict IP & confidentiality.

Cross functional coordination

  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Know all relevant stake holders, their role, function and requirements. Effective communication and coordination with relevant stake holders for sample submission as per departmental guidelines and providing information, well within time lines.

Training, Coaching and Mentoring

  • Improve knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and analytical techniques through regular discussion with supervisor, attending weekly/biweekly progress update meetings, group meetings, class room training/seminars etc.
  • Learn new techniques and technologies used in the chemistry domain for efficiency (Eg. Parallel execution of multiple reactions, microwave chemistry).

Resource Planning, utilization and Management

  • Ensure safety at work through enforcement of good laboratory practices and follow safety and quality systems in the laboratory.
  • Maintain and use the equipment/instruments as per SOP and general housekeeping norms.
