Aastrika SPHERE is a comprehensive capacity building programme, consisting of both a collaborative digital learning platform as well as in-person training for different stakeholders in the healthcare field using multiple learning methodologies.

Aastrika has several initiatives to establish professional midwives as a prominent and successful cadre in India.

These include establishment of a Bangalore-based Midwife-Led Care Unit (MLCU), support for the Government of India's Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery (NPM) initiative, programs to increase awareness and demand for respectful maternity care, and advocacy work to promote midwifery.

As a part of establishing a cadre of midwives, the Government of India has set up National Midwifery Training Institutes (NMTIs) with a cascade model for capacity building across the country.

from the NMTI are responsible for setting up State Midwifery Training Institutes (SMTI), to train Midwife Practitioners in every state.

Aastrika Foundation is supporting the NMTI and SMTI at Bengaluru at Vanivilas Hospital, a high caseload public healthcare facility, with state-of-the-art infrastructure.


The Midwifery Educator must resonate with midwifery values and principles to become a champion to advocate the midwifery model of care.

She must undergo comprehensive training, and complete courses to become a professional midwife with international-level competencies. Upon completion of the requisite training, she is expected to train other healthcare personnel. The Midwifery Educator must be flexible in travelling to different hospitals/universities to carry out midwifery training.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Undergo all the training (physical and digital) that is required to become a midwife educator of international quality.
  • Contribute to the Learning Resource Package and the Midwifery Initiatives, in general, by providing active and consistent feedback.
  • Help / contribute to the establishment of midwifery cadre in both public and private sectors.
  • Ensure timelines, goals, and objectives are met.
  • Liaise with the internal team and partners as needed and ensure colleagues and supervisors are apprised of all aspects of the training.
  • Contribute to other activities and take up roles / tasks as needed.
  • Identify challenges / roadblocks, and look at finding solutions to ensure smooth implementation of the programme.
  • Ideate, collect data, and participate in conferences and seminars.
  • Must be willing to continue clinical practice, along with anchoring midwifery education training.

Skill Requirements:

  • Minimum of two years recent clinical experience in maternity care with passion towards midwifery.
  • Passionate about advocating midwifery and women-centric care as well as a basic understanding of midwifery academics.
  • Excellent communications skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex issues in a concise, compelling, and easily understandable manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a proven record of handling a variety of stakeholders who are very different from each other, with an ability to do conflict management.
  • The role requires a person who is self-driven, has a high sense of accountability and the ability to work independently, is entrepreneurial and agile; is meticulous; and is attentive to details.
