Your Role and Responsibilities:

The Network Engineering department within IBM Cloud's IaaS Network Engineering team provides incident and problem management, internal and external customer-driven changes, next generation network evolution guidance, network testing, new network solutions use case validation, break-fix troubleshooting, and maintenance services for all aspects of data networking including but not limited to responsible for ongoing support of our global network infrastructure including routers, switches, data center network, transit and transport links which connect data centers sites to other networks and to other data center sites.

The Systems Administrator position builds and supports various Linux systems, used by Network Engineering to support network infrastructure. The systems run tools for monitoring, logging, network metrics polling, automation, and some network control plane functions.

Systems Administrator role includes the following responsibilities:

  • Receive and manage escalations from other teams as well as various monitoring tools involving service-affecting issues.
  • Troubleshoot, isolate and correct serviceaffecting issues on the systems.
  • Plan, schedule, and implement maintenance activities which include software upgrades, hardware replacement and infrastructure changes.
  • Deploy new systems manually, using deployment automation.
  • Create and improve the automation of systems deployment and management.
  • Performance analysis and optimization.
  • Maintain systems compliance based on various policies and controls.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external audiences with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Maintains high quality customer service to internal and external groups when needed.
  • On call rotation might also be required

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Ability to deploy Linux systems from bare metal, and work within CHEF/Ansible/Salt frameworks.
  • Scripting and automation abilities, to handle legacy tools and repos.
  • Hardware understanding, to direct deployment of devices via remote hands.
  • Security and compliance understanding towards systems and software patching.
  • Ability to initiate and effectively utilize "remote hands" assistance within data center for items such as fault isolation, installation/test and troubleshooting physical equipment as well as replacing faulty components.
  • On call rotation could also be required.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 6+ years of experience as a systems administrator, in a service provider environment.
  • Demonstrated history of organization and time management skills
  • Demonstrated history of verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work remotely with little or no direct supervision
  • Exhibit a strong understanding of customer service
  • Must be selfmotivated and disciplined
  • Ability to recognize and prioritize critical tasks independently
