Program Director - Advanced Submarine Sonar Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory, DRDO, Kochi, India June 2018 – May 2024 •
Design and Development Oversight: Led end-to-end development of sonar systems, managing design, installation, and prototype sea trials. Successfully integrated advanced sensors of different kinds and purpose, fiber optics cables and junction boxes, wet-end & onboard systems, through underwater connectors and hull penetrations. Advanced design with the introduction of lot many technologies. World class design.
• Lifecycle Management: Oversaw all phases from technical design to operational validation on live platforms, ensuring system performance and reliability. Also guided the team for onboard hardware design, NW interconnect as well as the architecture of entire sonar system.
• Quality Assurance and Compliance: Established quality protocols for distributed underwater sensor electronics, meeting high standards of operational integrity. Wide use of Fibre optics cables.
• Cost Analysis: Conducted budgeting and resource allocation, ensuring efficient utilization of funds for sub projects under sonar program.
• Results: Delivered a scalable, reliable design with all new technologies for a prototype fitment. Achieved very high reliable performance with system stability. Cleared for full development for the final high value platform. Full Development in progress.
Program Director - Integrated Coastal Surveillance (ICSS) Program Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory, DRDO, Kochi, India June 2009 – June 2016
• Strategic Planning, Development and Acquisition: Spearheaded the design and deployment of a nationwide coastal surveillance system, utilizing radar, EO cameras, AIS, and sonar. Coordinated development of sensor to specification from multiple locations and wide-area network architecture across locations.
• Lifecycle Management: Managed sensor selection, development, and integration, optimizing system performance for threat perception and target tracking. Constructed tall towers at the cost for Installed and integrated these systems with a control station far from the coast.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Worked with engineering, quality, and project management teams to ensure seamless integration and alignment with mission goals.
• Cost Efficiency: Directed cost analysis and budget optimization to maintain financial alignment across all project phases.
• Results : The project expanded my expertise in various specialisations such as sensors, communication, satellite, Fibre optic communication, wide area NW, high-performance computing, and integrated display systems etc. system successfully in place. The system design can be scaled up or down to cover entire coast of the country or limited to strategic harbours.
Group Director - Embedded Systems Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory, DRDO, Kochi, India June 2016 – June 2018
• System Architecture Design: Developed generic, processor-independent frameworks for sonar systems, emphasizing modular, reusable architecture.
• Generic Beam former : Designed an array shape independent versatile reusable beam-former capable of static as well as adaptive capabilities.
• Generic processing HW: By harnessing the multicore capability both signal processing as well as post processing could be done on one type of OS based SBCs, utilising the layered architecture and in house libraries.
• Technical Enhancements : Implemented a standardized, high-speed FO based network design across embedded systems, promoting longevity and adaptability. Adapted GPON technology for large number sensor level integration.
• Quality and Compliance: Created robust testing protocols and verification methods to ensure product compliance with operational standards. Developed teams for IV&V. upgraded from MIL-STD-498 to life cycle process ISO 12207,
• Results: Processor independent modular layered SW with configurable layer, resulting in faster development cycle 55%, increased reliability, obsolescence tolerant HW SBC, high performance replaceable ATR type processing cages instead of cumbersome Cabinets in addition to ease of cooling etc.
Divisional Head - Controllers Network and HMI Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory, DRDO, Kochi, India June 2002 – June 2009
• Embedded Systems Modernization: Transitioned sonar systems from traditional designs using wired backplanes, low data rate communication etc to a standardized open architecture, improving data rate and reliability.
• HMI and Network Design: Created reusable, component-based layered SW for HMI, networks and control software. Enhanced network interfaces to support diverse protocols, including Ethernet and ARINC, MIL 1553 etc. Development effort one time for the framework and further projects can adapt and do specific project related activities. Introduced quality standards.
• Results: The system design till then was wired custom back planes, slow and low reliability communication links with limited data rate and custom repeated development for each project.
