IT Database Administration work includes designing, configuring, and managing databases to ensure the integrity, security and accessibility of the organization's data including: Defining standards for physical data storage, maintenance, access and security administration.

Performing backup and recovery using Database Management Systems. Configuring database parameters and defining data repository requirements, data dictionaries, and warehousing requirements. Designing and implementing approaches to improve database performance, capacity, and scalability.


Responsibilities:


  • Database Design and Configuration - 35%Designs, configures, and manages databases of broad scope and complexity to ensure the integrity, security, and accessibility of the organization's data. Maintains and updates complex data schemas consisting of shared tables, indexes, database-resident program units, and other logical structures.
Configures and defines data repository requirements, data dictionaries, and warehousing requirements.

  • Performance and Troubleshooting - 45%

Minimizes database downtime and managing parameters to provide fast query responses; audits and monitors attempted transactions and tracks transaction logs to prevent errors and disruptions.

Analyzes, resolves, and corrects complex or persistent issues with database connectivity and functionality.
Performs tests and evaluations regularly to ensure data security, privacy, and integrity.
Monitors the user authentication process and administers security parameters (e.g. user names, passwords, local and external authentication, etc.); identifies data authenticity and security improvements.
Conducts regular checks, data updates, and tunes database instances to optimize performance and enhance capacity and scalability.
Conducts backup and recovery to ensure vital information can be retrieved in case of accidental loss or security breach.
Provides proactive and reactive data management support and training to users.

  • Practice Maturation - 20%
Defines standards for physical data storage, maintenance, access, and security administration.
Documents and enforces database administration policies, procedures, and standards.
Coaches, reviews, and delegates work to less experienced team members.
Requires 8+ years of related experience as a database administrator.
Experience with relational database development and management and related software.
Programming and scripting languages (e.g. SQL, Oracle, SQL Server).
Data backup, recovery, security, and integrity principles and best practices.
Application programming interfaces (APIs) and their functions.
Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile methodology and best practices.
Incident management best practices to respond to issues and incidents.
End-to-end project coordination and collaboration.
Database administration case tools (frontend/backend) and third party tools.
Tools used to generate reports.
Trouble ticketing tools.
Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Project coordination, organizational, prioritization, and time management skills with attention to detail.
