Technologist Cat Cracking R&D


The R&D Engineer is responsible for process and engineering R&D in support of Shell Fluid Catalytic Cracking and related technologies to develop new or improved processes for multiple Shell businesses as part of the Energy Transition, including low carbon, bio-based feedstocks, and plastics circularity.


Where you fit


This position is in the R&D team of the Fluidization Technology Center of Expertise (CoE) - Primary Processes department within the Chemicals, Downstream Process and Biotechnology VPship in Shell Projects & Technology.

The Fluidization R&D team and CoE is a global team with staff located in Houston, Texas USA and Bangalore, India accountable for supporting the fluidization processes, equipment, models, operations, projects and licensing.

The main fluidization technology applied is Catalytic Cracking, however current programs support several emerging bioprocesses and other technologies as part of the Energy Transition.

Cat crackers significantly contribute to refining margins and, in this role, you will be afforded the opportunity to deliver tremendous value to our refinery's current operation and future transition.


What's the role?

Your accountabilities are:

  • Process and Engineering R&D in support of Shell Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and related technologies and manufacturing sites.
  • In conjunction with Catalyst & Analytical Technology team, carry out the FCC R&D experimental plan on pilot plant scale test units, including novel and challenging feedstocks in support of Energy Transition projects.
  • Manage R&D projects up to $3 mln/yr.
  • Support the commissioning and startup of the $12 mln CAPEX project to replicate Houston lab and pilot plant facilities at STCB Bangalore.
  • Design equipment improvements to improve operation and expand capability. As needed, help manage, troubleshoot, and maintain the experimental facilities for high availability and safe operation.
  • Help identify, analyze, and evaluate novel feedstocks in support of low carbon, biobased, and/or circularity targets in support of Shell's energy transition targets.
  • Work closely with Projects & Technology, Contracting & Procurement, Downstream Manufacturing Support, and refinery personnel to optimize FCC unit catalyst selection and operating strategies for maximum value within constraints.
  • Support process development studies in support of FCC related projects. Contribute to the development and implementation of technology solutions to maximize value to Shell Downstream operations.
  • Develop relationships with catalyst and technology suppliers and extramural research (EMR) partners such as universities and research consortiums for effective collaborations towards execution of R&D Projects.
  • Provide timely, costeffective technical services to downstream manufacturing.
  • Provide skilled refining process technology advice on optimal operation and plant performance
  • Define and execute risk mitigation plans for internal and external technology developments at all stages of development.
  • Perform data analysis, document results of experimental studies and make recommendations for future action.
  • Recommend patent action arising from research programs.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers and pilot plant operators
  • Interface with project sponsors and customers.

What we need from you

  • PHD or master's degree in chemical engineering with 5+ years relevant experience in operations, manufacturing, and/or R&D experience in petrochemicals or refining process technology.
  • Significant experience in Process Engineering and Technology, particularly FCC or related processes, is highly recommended.
  • Experience as an operations support engineer (OSE), manufacturing technical support, or equivalent for refining, petrochemical, or related processes is desirable.
  • Experience with experimental studies in laboratories and/or pilot plants.
  • Experience with design/planning/modification/operation of experimental facilities (laboratory and/or pilot).
  • Reactor engineering and catalyst knowledge is an advantage.
  • Understanding of fluidized beds, gassolid fluidization and solids handling is an advantage
  • Experience with process safety processes including Management of Change, HAZOP, PHA, and PSM bowtie analysis, either in manufacturing operations and/or R&D experimental facilities.
  • Basic understanding of the stages of the Technology Development, from ideation through proof of concept, scale up, and commercialization.
  • Experience with operation of experimental facilities, including distributed control systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven networking, teamworking, and stakeholder management skills.
