Cytogenetics - Technologist/ Scientific Officer
Conceptualized in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern
parts of India and the neighbouring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations
in Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust - Tata Medical Centre
Trust. It is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped
with modern facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment. The hospital was
designed by Cannon Design, a renowned architectural firm from North America. It is located on
13 acres of land at New Town in Kolkata, West Bengal.

437 beds, serves all sections of the society, with 75% of the infrastructure earmarked for
subsidized treatment for the underprivileged sections. It provides a wide spectrum of services
from diagnosis and therapy to rehabilitation and palliative support. The Institution's objective is
to excel in service, education and research.
The Cytogenetics Department handles more than 3000 samples per year that include
peripheral blood, bone marrow and solid tissue. The laboratory also performs Mitomycin C
testing to detect chromosome breakage in patients suspected to have Fanconi anaemia.
Technologist/Scientific Officer - Cytogenetics
Qualification:
BSC/MSC
Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of experience in Cytogenetics & FISH is a must.
Essential Skills required:
The post holder must have the following essential skills:
Person recruited must have knowledge for cell culture and harvesting techniques.
He must be able to perform the karyotyping of human chromosomes i.e.
organization of chromosomes according to a standardized ideogram as well as
chromosome preparation analysis, different staining procedures including slide
preparation, microscopic and photo microscopic analysis, computer imaging
techniques.
Technical skills to perform Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) on liquid
(peripheral blood/bone marrow) and solid tissues (FFPE)
Ability to interpret the results
Basic knowledge of computers i.e. Microsoft word, PowerPoint and Excel
Must be a team player with willingness to put in extra efforts.
**Brief Job Description: Role in planning and performing all assays in
Cytogenetics including Karyotyping,
FISH.
Processing all the received samples including Culturing, Harvesting, Slide making,
Banding etc.
Media and reagent preparation
Performing and analysing FISH assays
Knowledge of ISCN
Ensure strict adherence to SOPs while performing the test.
All routine administrative work related to day-to-day functioning of the lab including
inventory management.
Updating daily log sheets.
To provide training or knowledge transfer to the trainees/observers through training
programs.
Active participation in the Inter/Intra-departmental sessions like journal clubs
Conference.
