Project Overview:


Purpose Climate Lab is implementing a project called _Buniyaad: Equity-Based Decarbonisation of UP's Brick Kiln Industry_ in Uttar Pradesh from Jan - April 2024.

The brick kiln industry in UP does not have a regulatory mechanism and contributes significantly (20%) to the country's total carbon black emissions.

In this context, the project aims to follow a threefold approach for realising this decarbonisation transition.

This includes strengthening the multi-stakeholder collective which leverages an existing network of over 300 organisations active as the 100% UP Coalition, shifting narrative and perception around the need for and benefits of technology change in the brickworks ecosystem, and pushing for policy support and action through introduction of a Brick Kiln Action Plan.

The project will target locations with high density of brick kilns such as Varanasi, Pratapgarh, Lucknow and Ambedkar Nagar, leveraging the active presence of 100% UP Coalition members and coverage of existing government schemes.


Role Overview

Roles & Responsibilities:


  • Support research activities

  • Undertake secondary literature research (academic, policy and media focused) on existing just energy transitions trends (global and local trends) and technology innovations in brick kilns sector in India and draw insights for internal project planning and implementation
  • Identify and share new research studies and launch events for the team's participation.
  • Identify key actors/think tank working on just energy transition in India and support relationship building for project collaborations
  • Support the project team in Identifying sector leaders as potential coauthors for thought leadership pieces
  • With the IML manager, support development of research insights briefs for internal and external circulation
  • Review partner reports, event concept notes and stakeholder consultation agenda.
  • Regular shareback of research insights and learnings with the project team
  • Supporting monitoring of project activities and outcomes achievement

  • Develop and rollout project monitoring tools for planned activities as per the project IML framework
  • Oversee data collection through field visits and inperson support during project events
  • Lead data analysis and updating the log frame with target achievement
  • With the IML manager, codevelop and execute participatory research activities to collect evidence for project outcomes achievement.

  • Support in consolidation of project learnings and insights

  • Lead and develop insights documentation in the form of case studies, research briefs and policy recommendations

Eligibility Criteria

Essential

  • 23 years of relevant work experience in qualitative research in the social impact sector, preferably in climate change/ energy transition
  • Understanding of UP's social economic and political context
  • Based out of UP, preferably Lucknow or Varanasi with capacity to undertake frequent travel to project districts
  • Excellent research skills qualitative methodology including participatory research approach
  • Proficient in English with a working knowledge of Hindi
  • Good knowledge of MS Office and Google Suite, esp MS Excel, Google Spreadsheets
  • Excellent written documentation and presentation skills
  • Excellent critical thinking, logical thinking and analysis skills
  • Independent worker, organised, collaborative and inclusive approach to work
  • Critical thinker, have high integrity, a team player with handson attitude, and a passionate problemsolving spirit

Desired

  • Understanding or relevant experience of working on climate change/ sustainable energy/public policy
  • Relevant experience of working with multiple project stakeholders and grassroot organisations
  • Good knowledge of qualitative research and data visualisation tools and softwares, Atlas, Tableau etc.

Time commitment:20 hrs per week with availability throughout the week with openness to travel over weekends.
