Job Details:


Available now for 6- 12 months, a full time registrar position in Intensive Care Medicine for a physician who is at the level of PGY3 or above.

Based in a 400 bed general hospital providing acute and elective care with 24/7 emergency department and intensive care.


You will join a team of consultant intensivists, registrars and house officers providing intensive and high dependency medical care with excellent clinical learning opportunities, on site medical education and an enviable lifestyle with great homes, superb schools, a burgeoning economy, and no traffic headaches.

The Intensive Care Unit serves both Intensive Care and High Dependency patients.

It is staffed by 8 Intensive Care Consultants, a Clinical Nurse Manager, 3 Associate Clinical Nurse Managers, a Clinical Nurse Educator, 51 Registered Nurses and 8 Intensive Care Registrars.


It admits both adult and paediatric patients and provides an inter-hospital transport service within Hawke's Bay and to tertiary referral centres.

Registrars undertake flight training as part of their orientation programme.

The unit is CICM accredited for General training, Paediatrics (AP12) and Rural.


Key Tasks:


  • You will work under the supervision of senior medical officers (SMOs) and be responsible for the assessment and management of patients presenting to the intensive care and high dependency departments including arrangement of investigations as appropriate
  • You shall attend clinical meetings including Case Presentations, Grand Round and Medical Audit Meeting and will be expected to contribute or present to these meetings as requested by their SMO.
  • You will be expected to supervise and train house officers

Essential Requirements

  • Eligible for provisional or full general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Completed internship and be at PGY3 level or above
  • 12 months minimum experience in general medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, anaesthetics or ICU
  • ACLS
  • Team working skills
  • Clear communication
  • BASIC course completed prior to commencement.
