Core responsibilities of Assistant/Associate Editor
Learns and performs key publishing acquisition activities with development guidance from manager / peers, including:

  • Soliciting, reading and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market and suitability for the list_
  • Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles and new products_
  • Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors, book series editors and editorial board members_
  • Supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects_
  • Negotiating publishing contract terms_
  • Supporting manager with editorial task assistance, as needed_
  • Remaining a point of contact for authors/editors throughout publication process_
  • Builds an understanding of editorial policies and processes, ensuring they are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met
  • Develops a network of authors/editors through various engagement activities within the research community
  • Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as some travel to academic conferences and campus visits, as appropriate
  • Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial project management, marketing, production and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest
  • Manages and grows a publishing program, delivering competitive and profitable products in line with Publishing Unit strategy.

Core qualifications, experience and skills

  • Educated to Master's level or higher (preferably in a relevant field of study)
  • An interest in and understanding of how academic publishing and communities function
  • Good verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail
  • Able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative
  • Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
  • Excellent team-working and relationship building skills
