Possible bacterial contribution to the onset f severe ROP
Lead author Monika Modrzejewska, MD, from the Scientific Association of Students, II Department of Ophthalmology, Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin, Poland, said that a group of Polish researchers looked at a potential correlation between positive bacterial cultures and severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in very-low-birthweight premature infants. The researchers made the assumption that prenatal inflammation might have a significant role in the development of the condition because the origins of ROP are yet unknown.
