Conceptualized in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern
parts of India and the neighboring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations in
Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust - Tata Medical Centre Trust.
It is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern
facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment.

Scientific Officer in Microbiology and Bio-informatics: 1 post

Job Summary:

The Scientific Officer in Microbiology and Bio-informatics will use analytical measurement tools
and programs to gather, analyse, and record biological characteristic data, and then to interpret,
visualize, and present the data for further study. He/she would be responsible for analysing next
generation sequencing data related to meta-genomics, whole genome sequencing or targeted gene
sequencing.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Collects and document large amounts of scientific data.
Analyse collected data using statistics, computer programs, and other sophisticated tools;
make assessments and predictions based on observations.
Reports findings, in written and oral presentation forms, using appropriate visuals.
Assists with preparation of reports for scientific publication.
Develop and maintain searchable databases of research and biological data.
Collaborates with fellow scientists, clinicians, and information technology staff to ensure

that data needs and requirements are met and understood.
Create and maintain user manuals and procedures and provide training on these documents

to assist with database use and data management.

Perform routine system administrative actions such as upgrades, backups, and
troubleshooting.

Maintain current knowledge of emerging computational methods and technologies.
Perform phenotypic and molecular tests in Microbiology as commonly used for medical

Bio-informatics work in other areas of the Department of Laboratory Sciences (e.g.

Molecular Pathology)
Performs other related duties as assigned


Required Skill and Abilities:

Proficiency with Linux/ Python programming language
Knowledgeable about PCR, Sanger sequencing, next generation sequencing and data

analysis
Ability to collect, document, and analyse large amounts of data.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint

Essential qualification:
MSc in Microbiology / Bio-technology/ Bio-informatics


Desirable qualification:
PhD in the relevant specialty.


Experience:

Three to five years of related experience. Hands on experience in Bio-informatics and
microbiology/ bio-technology would be desirable.
