    Description

    Your responsibility as a databaseadministrator (DBA) will be the performance integrity and securityof a database. Youll be involved in the planning and development ofthe database as well as in troubleshooting any issues on behalf ofthe users.

    Youll ensurethat:

    • data remains consistent acrossthe database
    • data is clearlydefined
    • users access data concurrently in aform that suits their needs
    • there is provisionfor data security and recovery control (ensuring all data isretrievable in anemergency).

    Responsibilities
    Asa database administrator youll needto:

    • establish the needs of users andmonitor user access and security
    • monitorperformance and manage parameters in order to provide fastresponses to frontend users
    • map out theconceptual design for a planneddatabase
    • consider both backend organisation ofdata and frontend accessibility forendusers
    • refine the logical design so that itcan be translated into a specific datamodel
    • further refining the physical design tomeet system storage requirements
    • install andtest new versions of the database management system(DBMS)
    • maintain data standards includingadherence to the Data Protection Act
    • writedatabase documentation including data standards procedures anddefinitions for the data dictionary(metadata)
    • control access permissions andprivileges
    • develop manage and test backup andrecovery plans
    • ensure that storage andarchiving procedures are functioningcorrectly
    • carry out capacityplanning
    • work closely with IT project managersdatabase programmers and multimediaprogrammers
    • communicate regularly withtechnical applications and operational staff to ensure databaseintegrity and security
    • commission and installnew applications and customize existing applications in order tomake them fit for the purpose
    • manage thesecurity and disaster recovery aspects of adatabase.
