The purpose of the role is to manage the Legal team in Bangalore & Manila.
These teams play an important role in supporting the Global Legal Function in protecting the Group's reputation by helping to future-proof the organization through robust legal risk management, detailed MI reporting, and wide-ranging legal and documentation services and query handling.
The team offers a diverse range of legal skills, operations skills, risk and assurance experience, administrative assistance and transformation/project management skills across all countries and territories in which Legal teams operate.
What you'll do:
Impact on the Business/Function:
- Strong commercial mindset to ensure build, interlock and oversight of all associated cost, budget, FTE and Governance related to multiple programs of work
- Support both legal and operational teams with head count management, hiring approvals and organizational design optimization in Bangalore
- Ability to effectively engage and negotiate with senior stakeholders, demonstrating considered foresight and highly developed interpersonal skills
- Lead the continuous development, implementation and improvement of the processes, structures, capabilities, capacity and infrastructure needed to deliver agreed plans and targets, collaborating with colleagues to maximize end to end integration, effectiveness and efficiency
- Outstanding organizational and planning skills with experience of management of multiple complex programs/business transformations, with knowledge on when and how to reprioritize, or escalate as required
- Proven ability in analytical rigor, including being able to contextualize data into business activities and conclusions
Customers / Stakeholders:
- Valued contributor to the entire legal function working with the Global Legal COO, Divisional and Regional GCs and DGC's to share best practices, driving global and functional consistency where appropriate
- Develop and manage a forward looking and strategic relationship with the business across sectors to ensure work load is considered well in advance, resources are effectively deployed and deliverables are controlled within KPIs
- Incumbent shall play a pivotal role in the Group Legal strategy of having the "right work at the right place"
- Maintaining a flexible operating model ensuring new business transactions are consistently prioritized effectively to exploit revenue generating activities, and credit annual renewals are serviced in a quality and timely manner
Leadership & Teamwork:
- Advanced leadership, management, collaboration and coaching skills with experience of leading and directing cultural change within a large organisation
- Experience of successfully managing teams of highly skilled individuals; able to motivate and set the tone for the teams across varied diversity
- Identifying appropriate training & development requirements, lead and motivate staff with differing aspirations working in productivity based environment where deadlines are critical
- Proven experience in delivering against aggressive deadlines while working across the matrix of multiple functions and businesses
Operational Effectiveness & Control:
- Ability to comprehend and minimize operational risks including wide understanding of Legal risk, audit controls and compliance requirements
- Manage and control GSCs costs
- Monitor the successful implementation or (and adherence to) operational risk management controls management
Management of Risk:
- The jobholder will also continually reassess the operational and legal risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
- This will be achieved by ensuring all actions take account of the likelihood of such risks occurring. Also by addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department.
Role Dimensions:
- Manage front line financial control and cost approvals for all teams providing services to the Function within the GSC
- Support the global legal strategy in Bangalore (and possibly other offshore sites), manage and lead through local issues
What you will need to succeed in the role:
- Over 20 years of relevant experience within the banking/financial services industry
- Ability to effectively engage and negotiate with senior stakeholders, demonstrating considered foresight and highly developed interpersonal skills
- Qualified lawyer preferred but not essential.
- Experience of successfully managing teams of highly skilled individuals; able to motivate and set the tone for the teams across varied diversity
