About the role

As an Emerging Technology Researcher at AstraZeneca, you will play a vital role in charting the technological course for innovation within the pharmaceutical industry. This position calls for a professional who is adept at navigating the rapidly changing tech landscape, with a focus on identifying and analysing emerging trends that could have a significant impact on our business.

Your responsibilities will include thorough research and analysis of cutting-edge technologies, synthesising this information into detailed reports and presentations that will inform strategic decision-making. Your insights will help shape AstraZeneca's approach to integrating new technologies, ensuring we remain at the forefront of the industry.

With a clear vision for the future, you will serve as a key resource for strategic leaders, providing them with the knowledge they need to understand the potential of new and emerging technologies. Your work will involve close collaboration with various teams, translating complex technical information into actionable strategic insights.

The right candidate for this role is technically proficient, proactive, and driven by a passion for technology and its applications in all aspects on the enterprise as well as healthcare. You will be expected to have strong analytical skills, an ability to communicate effectively, and a track record of conducting high-quality research.

What you will be doing (outputs)

Thought Leadership : Proactively be ahead of the technology curve and provide thought leadership on new and emerging technologies. You enable prediction of the impacts to the healthcare/life-sciences sector, across different verticals. Assess existing capabilities within AstraZeneca and work with strategic leaders, Business Technology Groups (BTGs) and Enterprise Architects, to translate innovative ideas into actionable strategies for leadership.

Research and Communication : Conduct comprehensive research on technologies impacting the business and pharmaceutical value chain and synthesise findings into compelling reports and presentations that educate and drive strategic action among senior leaders. You'll be operating as an internal consultancy with expertise in new and emerging technologies.

Trailblaze New Technologies : Lead the charge for new and emerging technologies, ensuring alignment with governance, and adherence to innovation processes to keep AstraZeneca at the forefront of the industry.

Trend Analysis and Strategic Influence : Proactively monitor and analyse technological trends, offering domain expertise that informs strategic planning and decision-making, and inspires investment in areas with the most potential for disruptive innovation.

Partnership Engagement : Harness the power of networking to forge impactful collaborations. Engage with external partners to address AstraZeneca's future challenges.

Maintaining networks: Curating communities-of-interest in the application of emerging and digital technologies.

Knowledge Stewardship : Contribute to a shared knowledge repository, ensuring high-quality content that serves as a valuable resource for global technology insights and learning within AstraZeneca.

Skills and competencies

Strong technological understanding : Possess a robust understanding of technology and its practical applications.

Analytical mindset: Ability to process research landscapes – comparing and evaluating products and technologies. Ability to recognise innovative research and identify leaders in fields.

Strategic Storytelling : Storytelling skills are crucial for effectively translating complex technical concepts and visionary ideas into simple, impactful narratives that resonate with senior executives. You know what good looks like and can either create or direct others to create glossy material that can compete with what would be produced by an external consultancy.

Innovation Enthusiasm : A fervent desire to stay informed about the latest trends and developments in the innovation landscape. A genuine eagerness to engage directly with technologies, coupled with the drive and ability to rapidly learn new skills.

Influence & Collaboration : Confidence interacting with external partners help deliver timely product innovations. The capacity to articulate intricate technical details in a clear manner that is easily understandable by senior strategic leaders as well as your colleagues in teams like Enterprise Architecture.

Communication: Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively – both verbally and in writing

Experience and Qualifications

Emerging tech trend analysis: You have knowledge of trends in key emerging technologies for a healthcare company and are passionate about applying this to produce insights for senior audiences.

Emerging technology exposure: Awareness of areas such as data science, real-time 3D, AR/VR/XR, computer vision, AI, robotics, quantum computing, etc.

Tech Industry Acument: Knowledge of big/small tech business landscape, start-ups, VCs, and academia is desirable.

Project Experience : Confidence working independently and collaboratively on projects with an understanding of source control and awareness project management methodologies.
