Pneumonia during pregnancy

abstract:
pneumonia during pregnancy has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality compared with nonpregnant women. The goal of this article is to review current literature describing pneumonia in pregnancy. This review will identify maternal risk factors, potential complications, and prenatal outcomes associated with pneumonia and describe the contemporary management of the varied causes of pneumonia in pregnancy
Overview:
Introduction:
Pneumonia it is a severe condition that occurs as the result of a lung infection.
The Pneumonia that occurs during pregnancy is called as the maternal pneumonia.
In many people, pneumonia begins with the a common cold or the flu, which is the and then spreads to the lungs.
The  Pneumonia can be the life-threatening if it is the left untreated, andthe  pregnant women are the more vulnerable to the complications.
In the pregnancy, there can be a higher risk of the pneumonia. This is because being pregnant and the naturally the.     weakens your immune system, which is the making you more susceptible to  the infections and illness.
If the pneumonia progresses and the  causes complications, it can pose a serious risk to both mother and baby – in severe cases, it can cause premature birth and low birth weight. For this reason, it’s important for pregnant women to get medical advice if they develop any symptoms of pneumonia.
Symptoms
It is important to be familiar with the symptoms of pneumonia during pregnancy and seek treatment immediately. Common symptoms include:
cold and flu-like symptoms, such as a sore throat, a headache, and body aches
difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
extreme tiredness
a fever or having chills
chest pain
a cough that worsens
How is pneumonia diagnosed during pregnancy?
A doctor can give you a diagnosis of maternal pneumonia. Your doctor may:
listen to your lungs
take an x-ray of your lungs (chest x-rays are generally deemed safe during pregnancy)
assess your symptoms and health history
take a sputum sample

Management:
Common treatments for viral pneumonia are also deemed safe to use during pregnancy. Anti-viral medications can treat pneumonia in the early stages. Respiratory therapy may also be used.
If you have bacterial pneumonia, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Antibiotics cannot treat viral infections.
Your doctor may also recommend over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers to reduce fever and pain. This can include acetaminophen (Tylenol).
Getting sleep and drinking fluids are also essential in your recovery. Don’t take any new medications or supplements without asking your doctor first.
Can pneumonia cause complications during pregnancy?
Severe or untreated cases of pneumonia can lead to a variety of complications. Oxygen levels in the body may plummet because the lungs can’t produce enough to send around the body. A condition called empyema can develop, which is when fluids accumulate around the lungs. Sometimes the infection can spread from out of the lungs to other parts of the body.
Pneumonia may also cause complications with babies. These include:
premature birth
low birth weight
miscarriage
respiratory failure
When left untreated, maternal pneumonia may be fatal.
Conclusion:
Women with pneumonia during pregnancy had significantly higher risk of LBW, preterm birth, SGA, low Apgar scores infants, CS, and preeclampsia/eclampsia, compared to unaffected women.

The Important question about  the pneumonia in pregnancy?
